New adventures in domesticity

This weekend: Charlotte took her first step! Video and post coming soon.

I learned how to sneak more fiber and less fat into baked goodies. Pureed beans! No seriously, I cooked a bunch of great northern beans with no seasoning, drained them well, and blitzed them in the blender till smooth. You've heard of using bananas in banana bread and applesauce as a replacement for butter/shortening. WEll this works great. Using a straight 1:1 ratio of puree to butter, I made orange cranberry muffins with the bean puree and molasses crinkle cookies as well. Also, I made the molasses cookies with half whole wheat. Since the molasses and brown sugar make it dark, the kids don't know they are getting whole grains and veggies in their cookies. Sadly, my husband couldn't even eat a bite of them. To him, chocolate chip cookies with two cubes of butter are the only thing worth eating. And I can see the wisdom in that. If you only ate two a week, that's fine. But who eats only two a week?

More adventures: Our little peas are growing out in our front flower bed! First time I've ever had a plant survive infancy. We'll see how it goes. WE've had good weather for peas.

8 random things

1. I climbed Mount Timpanogos with my dad when I was about 10 years old. It's a 20-mile hike up to the peak, which is almost 12,000 feet. I was wearing canvas shoes from Payless.

2. I knew I was going to marry my now husband the first time I saw him.

3. After my first c-section, I was so drugged I forgot to breathe. It was just too much trouble.

4. I love Alfred Hitchcock films, The Twilight Zone series, and 1980s British comedy.

5. Since I was a kid, upon moving into a new residence I've had to rehearse in my mind every night the escape routes if someone came in to kill me.

6. My earliest memory is smashing my face into a chair leg after spinning around like Cinderella. I was three years old. Ten years later I smashed my face into a driveway trying to run bent-over commando style. both activites are harder than they look.

7. When I was little there was this girl next-door who could double-cross her legs. I was relieved when I figured out how to do this. Since then, the ability to double-cross my legs is the boundary between fit and fat.

8. I'm the product of homeschool, public school, and private school. I'm a high school dropout with a political science degree from BYU.

And I tag Liz and Theadra (like they don't have enough to do...) But actually doing got my story juices going again, so thanks Jake for tagging me.
